In 2019, he was the richest artist in the United Kingdom, with a total net worth of $384 million. Many sources believe Hirst, whose characteristic formaldehyde works have branded him as a champion of the macabre, is the world's richest visual artist.

In the 1990s, his career was intertwined with that of another prominent collector, Charles Saatchi, but their partnership ended due to rising conflict. His renown rose as a result of a series of paintings in which deceased animals are preserved in formaldehyde. A shark, a cow, and a sheep were among the creatures.

In September 2008, Hirst made an unprecedented step for a living artist by selling a whole exhibition, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, at the Sothesby Purchase auction and eclipsing his long-standing galleries. The auction exceeded all expectations, generating $198 million, exceeding both the record for a single artist sale and his previous record.

His net worth has only increased over the years and it is no doubt that he might even become a Billionaire someday.

Early Life Of Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol, England. His family relocated to Leeds shortly after his birth, where he spent most of his youth. He was reared alone by his mother after his parents divorced when he was 12 years old.

He was a wayward adolescent who was jailed twice for theft and was not a good student, but he showed potential in painting and finally decided to attend university. As a teenager in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Hirst was drawn to the punk music and social movement that was gaining traction in British society, with its rejection of convention and confrontational, gritty subject matter.

Hirst was a fan of an American band, despite the fact that his mother once melted one of their LPs into a fruit dish, and would make repeated references to them in his later writing.

Damien was always career minded and he knew what he had to do. He was always full of ideas and creative with his art. He had a way of coming up with things on the spot and letting his imagination run things.

Hirst studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, the University of London from 1986 to 1989, however, he was denied the first time he applied. He got engrossed in his studies and swiftly rose to prominence in the Goldsmiths student community, engaging in various groups and organizing student-run events.

During his summer vacations, he worked part-time in a morgue in Leeds, an experience that influenced the ideas and materials he eventually used as an artist. He sketched specimens and cadavers on occasion, and the task gave him the technical expertise he would later employ to convert biological material into sculptures.

How Damien Hirst Career Started

Saatchi became Hirst's benefactor in 1991, offering to support whatever the artist desired. The two men's agreement had immediate results. Hirst received international notice and praise during Saatchi's first Young British Artists exhibition in 1992.

His first Saatchi-funded work was a big installation piece named The Physical Impossibility in the Mind of Someone Living, which featured a preserved tiger shark in a large glass display.

Hirst was nominated for the Turner Prize, which is awarded to contemporary British artists under the age of 50. Though he did not win, he did get the prize in 1995. Almost instantly, he positioned himself as a divisive and contentious character in the world of contemporary art.

His sculptures of preserved, animals are his most famous and contentious works. He continued to work on surprising and hard creations, eliciting intense, love-hate reactions from the art community. He was inspired by his time, and he also identified Francis Bacon, a British painter noted for his frank, often brutal images of despondency and deformities, as a key influence.

By the late 1990s, Hirst had established himself as a major presence in British art and culture. He filmed the music video for Blur's "Country House," and he created and directed a short movie featuring comedian Eddie Izzard.

What Is Damien Hirst Doing Today?

He has been an active member of the culinary scene in the United Kingdom, supporting and constructing a number of restaurants, some of which have been more successful than others.

Damien also founded Other Criteria, a store that sells cheap, limited-edition collector's goods. He inaugurated the Newport Street Gallery in south London in October 2015, displaying his personal collection of over 3,000 works of art.

Hirst has had no trouble finding customers and audiences for his work after parting ways with Saatchi. While appreciating the intrinsic importance of public spectacle, he was astute enough to see that shock as a style was not sustainable, and while his work remains extremely contentious, he adapts and innovates to meet the needs of an audience that expects him to take risks.

For Hirst, controversy and success are inextricably linked, raising concerns about the connection between art and money that are unlikely to be answered anytime soon. Hirst, unquestionably one of the most recognized artists of his time, helped to set the circumstances for the formation of Tate Contemporary in 2000, which has since become the world's most-visited modern art museum.
