He began working at ESPN in 1994 as a member of the production team for the show rpm2night, during which time he began writing for the magazine. From 2001 to 2003, he helped in producing Totally NASCAR on FOX Sports Net and was editor in chief at NASCAR Media Group for five years, winning two Sports Emmys and creating the script for the documentary film Dale.

Also adding to his reporting and writing, McGee is the co-host of ESPN Radio's popular "Marty and McGee" program, which airs on Saturday afternoons.
