After graduating from college, the auctioneer entered the British Army and was commissioned as a PTI instructor in The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

He was also a good sportsman, and because he had never skied before, the army sent him to Bavaria for an exercise dubbed Snow Queen to teach him the sport. "I felt myself straight away at home in the highlands, in the snow on a pair of wooden skis," he recounted in an interview.

Raj worked on his skiing for the following three and a half years before eventually joining the army ski team. He trained in an army drill in Bavaria and soon became an army ski racer. He later competed in the Slalom and Downhill for the British Army.

After quitting the service, he traveled and went skiing in as many locations as he could afford. Raj came to Austria after serving as the road manager for the Flying Skiis aerial stunt team for a brief while.

Raj was the first non-Austrian trained ski instructor in Ellmau and the first British Asian ski instructor in Austria. In Austria, he qualified for my Austrian Ski Instructors papers and became a ski instructor in the resort of Ellmau in the Tyrol.

But he quickly realized that going into the antique business was right for him. Even now, Raj still adores skiing and the charming village of Ellmau, and he tries to get there at least once a year.
