Margery Tyrell is related to Alicent Hightower in that Alicent is her ancestor from her mother's side. Two strong women of two strong houses are infact related to each other.

House Hightower is one of the ancient royal houses in the part of Westeros known as the Reach, which House Tyrell predominantly dominates.

House of the Dragon has a far more constrained emphasis than the extensive Game of Thrones. The prequel series focuses on the members of a single-family contending for the Iron Throne rather than switching between other clans. The Hightower family also has a significant part to play in the HBO drama.

While it is true that House Hightower is renowned for being one of the Westerosi houses that refrained from open conflict with Aegon the Conqueror when he first set out to unite the Seven Kingdoms, one shouldn't anticipate that the Hightowers who are still alive during House of the Dragon will submit to their Targaryen rulers quite as quickly.

According to the books, Alicent, in particular, had a significant impact on the Targaryens' and the Hightowers' destiny, which is likely to be emphasized in the upcoming prequel series. In light of this, the following information on Alicent Hightower is provided for House of the Dragon viewers.

Margaery Tyrell is an ancestor of the Hightowers on her mother's side. She is the daughter of Mace Tyrell and Alerie Hightower.

If fact, when Margaery wed King Tommen Baratheon, she briefly served as queen consort. However, Margaery was destroyed along with Margaery's brother and father in the Sept attack by Tommen's power-hungry mother, Cersei.

Although Alicent is undoubtedly being coerced by her father to serve Viserys in the first HOTD episode, as the plot progresses, Alicent learns to use her marriage to Viserys and her capacity to bear children as her greatest strengths. It's similar to how Margaery can become queen by luring Tommen into giving her the position for herself.

It's quite difficult to understand the relationship between the two women considering the timeline between them. Alicent would be Margaery's great-great-great-great-great-aunt if she were descended from Alicent's cousins. Margaery was born exactly 150 years after Alicent passed away. Therefore, they have about five or six generational distance between the two.

Alicent was born to Ser Otto Hightower. Ser Gwayne Hightower was one of an unspecified number of her brothers. Four children and three grandkids were born to Alicent.

When Otto's older brother Ord Hightower passed away, his son Ormund Hightower took over. The dynasty was maintained by the latter. Lord Leyton Hightower, one of his great-grandchildren, had a daughter named Alerie who married Mace Tyrell to reunite the two families and fortify the two clans under the banner of one House. The Tyrell dynasty featured in Game of Thrones belongs to this line.

Margaery, played by Natalie Dormer in the television series, was Mace Tyrell's daughter. Before meeting an explosive "death" at the hands of Cersei Lannister, she wed first Renly Baratheon, then Joffrey Baratheon, and eventually King Tommen Baratheon.

Alicient Hightower Character Development

Alicent went to King's Landing with her father when Otto first assumed the role of the Hand of the King. She became the older Jaehaerys' constant friend while she was there.

Alicent spent so much time with Viserys' predecessor, Jaehaerys, that it is reported that he passed away as Alicent was reading to him. Jaehaerys thought Alicent was his daughter because of their extended time together.

Knowing that it suddenly makes a lot more sense for Alicent's father, Otto, to recommend to her in the House of the Dragon premiere that she spend time with Viserys.

Throughout the 1st season of House of the Dragon, Alicent's standing within King's Landing's royal circle will only intensify and change. The series' opening episode does an excellent job of laying the groundwork for Alicent's overall function in the narrative without giving anything away.

Olivia Cooke will take over as Alicent in a mid-season time leap from Emily Carey, who is presently playing the role. Similarly, Milly Alcock will eventually be replaced by Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Alicent & Otto Hightower Father-Daughter Duo

Ser Otto Hightower, Alicent's father, was one of her biggest supporters. Eventually, he pursued the issue too far and lost his position as Hand.

Otto was regarded for his famed knowledge in George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel, having served as Hand of the King under both Jaehaerys I and Viserys I. His plan to marry Alicent and Viserys may have given the impression that he was intellectually arrogant, but he remained meticulous.

Otto's wife isn't in the books, even though she is referenced in the first two episodes of House of the Dragon. Otto is the father of multiple children in the books, although the TV series has only mentioned Alicent; Martin claims that she has been deceased for a while.

After the passing of his previous Hand and son, Baelon Targaryen, Otto started acting as Jaehaerys' Hand. At the same time, Alicent, then 15 years old, entered the royal court.

After losing his wife Alysanne a year earlier, King Jaehaerys was in despair, resulting in the Great Council, which served as the setting for the epic succession scenario that opened Season 1 of House of the Dragon.

Jaehaerys' condition immediately deteriorated when Viserys was crowned king, and he spent the following two years bedridden, leaving Otto as the de facto ruler of the realm. In the meantime, Alicent was tasked in the novel with keeping an eye on the ill Jaehaerys.

Alicent Hightower Family History

The Hightower family tree has far more branches than the Targaryen family tree since they are not quite as tolerant of inbreeding. In the books by George R. R. Martin, King Viserys I marries Alicent, and the couple has four children together.

Their firstborn son, Aegon II Targaryen, rivals Rhaenyra, Alicent's old closest friend and Viserys I's daughter, for the Iron Throne. As a result, the once-friends transform into fierce rivals, and the kingdom is split between those who support Rhaenyra's claim to the throne and those who back Aegon II's claim. Initially, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the stepdaughter of Queen Alicent, and she got along well.

But those sentiments began to shift when Alicent gave birth to Prince Aegon, Princess Helaena, and Prince Aemond in quick succession, while Rhaenyra continued to be Viserys's heir. There could only be one first lady of the kingdom, notwithstanding the desires of both women.

To amuse Princess Rhaenyra, Prince Daemon Targaryen made fun of Alicent, Aegon, and Aemond, as well as the other greens, after he returned to King's Landing. He allegedly treated coolly toward princes Aegon and Aemond since they had dropped him even further down the succession ladder.

Hightower's Relationship With The Targaryen Family

Since the Hightower family has a long relationship with the Targaryen kings dating back to their first commander, Aegon the Conqueror, Alicent is not the only Hightower to have strong links with them.

Early in the Targaryen dynasty, the Hightowers played a considerably more active role at the Red Keep. The Hightower family was eager to submit to their new dragon-riding monarch and established themselves as courtiers when Aegon the Conqueror first united the Seven Kingdoms.

The Hightower family formed the house during the Dawn Age, and before King Aegon I's reign, they were sovereigns in their own right.

The maesters—the scholars, healers, messengers, and scientists in Martin's fictional world—live in the Citadel, which the Hightowers helped construct while controlling Oldtown.

Before Aegon's victory, the house acquired control over Highgarden through marriage. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize this location as the Tyrell family's ancestral home.

The Hightower family decided not to oppose the dragon lords after Aegon conquered Westeros; instead, they swore allegiance to them, and Aegon the Conqueror appointed Lord Manfred Hightower as the new ruler of Oldtown.

Ceryse Hightower, his great-granddaughter, married King Maegor I Targaryen as his first wife. The king, sometimes known as Maegor the Cruel, had six wives throughout his rule but no offspring with Ceryse.

During the Targaryen era, several Hightowers held the title of lord of Oldtown. Hobert (Steffan Rhodri), the elder brother of Otto, Alicent's father, served as Lord of Hightower under King Jaehaerys I.

Alicient Hightower Family Tree Relation With Game Of Thrones

There isn't much of a presence for House Hightower in Game of Thrones. However, the Hightowers will be among the most significant family in House of the Dragon because of both Alicent and Otto.

Otto and Alicent effectively establish themselves as the show's Cersei and Tywin Lannister stand-ins during their brief exchange in the House of the Dragon premiere. One of Westeros' most potent and well-known royal houses, House Hightower, has roots in Oldtown and a long history.

Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) chooses the knight bearing the emblem to be his first opponent during the jousting competition in the opening episode of House of the Dragon because that sigil resembles a tower with fire emerging from it.

The Hightower knight's name is unknown, but it seems likely that he is Gwayne Hightower, one of Alicent's brothers, even though this isn't explicitly stated.

Alicent's direct Hightower bloodline is terminated when she marries a Targaryen, and her children adopt the Targaryen surname. Ormund Hightower, an Alicient cousin, is still represented in the Hightower family tree. Lord Leyton Hightower, the last Hightower to rule Oldtown, is a distant descendant of his.

Lady Alerie Hightower, the child of Lord Leyton's wife, marries Mace Tyrell, the character known as the Lord of Highgarden in the television series Game of Thrones. Both served as parents to Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer), who would reign briefly after marrying King Joffrey in Season 4.

Lyness Hightower, the younger daughter of Lord Leyton, also happens to be Ser Jorah Mormont's divorced wife.

Alicient Hightower Green Dress Meaning

In most of House of the Dragon, Alicent wears either red or blue clothing. The wedding of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate) marks the first time we see her wearing green, a hue that is very significant to House Hightower.

Otto, her father, is no longer a Hand. Rhaenyra misled her about whether or not she was still a virgin, as she learns later, and this was a significant factor in her father's firing. Otto also cautions that when Rhaenyra tries to solidify her power, Alicent's children will be in great danger if Viserys passes away.

Even though the deck is stacked against her, Alicent uses her royal appearance to tell the Hightowers at the bridal feast that she won't give up easily.

After that, the "greens" and "blacks" are considered the two official factions in Westeros.

The "blacks" support Rhaenyra as the rightful successor, while the greens support Alicent and her child Aegon's claim to the Iron Throne. Larys Strong and Criston Cole are prominent greens, whereas Daemon Targaryen, Corlys Velaryon, and Rhaenys Targaryen are notable blacks.

Alicent's green garment is similar to George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood at a tournament honoring her five-year marriage to Viserys. Rhaenyra's spectacular attire in the red and "black" of House Targaryen steals the show instead of Alicent's outfit in the scene.
