Norvell, who was not the acting head coach, tested positive for Covid-19 before the rivalry game with The University of Miami. As a result, he concluded the season as head coach with a 3-5 record.

During Norvell's second season with the team, the Seminoles began 0-4 for the first time in 45 years, and they lost to Jacksonville State 20-17, their first-ever game against an FCS team.

Coaching Career 

Norvell was introduced as the Memphis Tigers' 24th head football coach in 2015. At the time of his appointment, Norvell was the youngest FBS head coach in the country (age 34). Under Todd Graham, he had led one of the most potent attacks in the country at Arizona State.

Norvell was a young, rising offensive coordinator who brought the high-octane style to Memphis. Like Justin Fuente, he used a fast-paced, pass-oriented spread offense.

As one of his first actions after taking over as head coach, Norvell decided to keep Darrell Dickey on the Fuente staff and promote him to associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and running backs coach. Norvell signed a five-year contract with the University of Memphis that began with a base pay of $1.8 million and increased somewhat yearly.

In the previous six NFL Drafts, 18 of Norvell's students were chosen, with 2022 first-round pick Jermaine Johnson II leading the way. For the past five years, Norvell has coached several draft picks.

Along with Johnson, Norvell coached second-round picks Anthony Miller and Asante Samuel, Jr., third-round picks Darrell Henderson, Antonio Gibson, and Dylan Parham, and fourth-round picks Dylan Parham.

Norvell has had a successful coaching career, having worked with 24 NFL Draft prospects, six All-Americans, including four first-team picks, four conference Players of the Year, and 68 all-conference honors.

While navigating a blend of youth and transfer contributions in his first two seasons as FSU's head coach, he has sought to re-establish the foundation and championship standards. His 2021 club included even more first- and second-year students than his team from 2020, which had the youngest roster in college football.

First- and second-year students made up 84 percent of the roster, 69 players made at least one appearance, and 43 players played in six or more games. FSU added 20 athletes from the transfer portal in the 2020 and 2021 seasons who participated in 240 games for the Seminoles.

Jermaine Johnson II, a first-team All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 enhanced his game to the point that the NFL selected him in the first round after just one season at Florida State.

First-team All-ACC defensive back Jammie Robinson and Johnson, the only athlete to earn a Player of the Year award in his 1st season with an ACC program, led FSU's contingent of eight all-conference accolades, the most for the program since 2016.

In his 1st season at Florida State, Norvell oversaw the nation's youngest squad as 34 players made their Seminoles debuts, with freshmen and sophomores making up 75% of the Seminoles roster.

Mike became the only coach in ACC history to beat a top-five team in his first season when FSU defeated No. 5 North Carolina 31-28 despite a global pandemic that disrupted spring practice after only three sessions and summer workouts and the regular season.

Maria Norvell Husband Was A Pro Player During His Early Days 

Mike Norvell played wide receiver as a student at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) from 2001 to 2005. At Central Arkansas, Norvell earned four letters and was inducted into the UCA Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

With 213 career grabs, he shattered the school record and finished second all-time in league with 2,611 receiving yards and 4.6 catches per game. In his four years as coach, he assisted the Bears in winning 33 games, including an 11-3 record in 2005. The following year, he started working as a graduate assistant coach at his alma institution.

Norvell played for the UCA Bears team that won the Gulf South Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2005, concluding the season 11-3. He graduated from Central Arkansas in 2005 with a bachelor's in social science and 2007 with a master's in training systems.
