English broadcaster and TV presenter Jeremy Paxman announced his retirement from the BBC show University Challenge as the quizmaster of the show due to concerns regarding his health.

The journalist has been very open about his condition and battle with Parkinson's since last year after discovering he had the disease. With the symptoms of the disease worsening, Jeremy decided to focus on his health and retire as a presenter before things got any worse for the presenter.

Jeremy Paxman Health and Illness Update: Does He Have Parkinson's?

Jeremy Paxman decided to end his reign over the BBC's quiz show University Challenge after having worsened symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

The broadcaster informed everyone in 2021 that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after taking a fall while walking his dog outside. News of his disease came to him as a shock since he did not have the most basic symptoms of the disease.

Paxman assured his viewers that his symptoms of Parkinson's were mild and that it did not affect his day-to-day life. But now, at age 72, his symptoms have worsened, which made him retire as a veteran quizmaster in the show.

Parkinson's disease is an incurable disease that affects the brain causing unintended movements or uncontrollable movements that may be shaking tremors, stiffness, and difficulty in coordination.

The disease worsens over time and has over 40 symptoms, making it very hard to diagnose in the early stages, and it only worsens as time goes on.

So, Jeremy Paxman is currently getting treatment for his disease. Still, since the disease is incurable, the medicines only help him slow the disease from progressing as fast and help with motor functions.

BBC Presenter Jeremy Paxman

Jeremy Paxman is a well-known name on television as he appears on BBC rather so often he has become a home brand. The journalist is best known for his 28 years of contribution as the quizmaster of the show University Challenge.

While other shows were mainly about the entertainment of the audience and participants, his performance was more intimidating and all about knowledge. Paxman had been a part of the show since 1994 after BBC revived the 60s show and held the record for hosting a show on the network for the most prolonged duration of 28 years.

The quizmaster announced that he would be stepping down from the show in the fall and will be on air with his final series till the summer of 2023.

The University Challenge presenter tried his best to hold on as the show presenter for as long as he could manage, but since his condition worsened, he decided to retire at 72.

Who Is Jeremy Paxman's Replacement On BBC?

BBC has not openly announced who will replace Jeremy Paxman as the quizmaster of University Challenge, but viewers have their wild guess.

Most viewers expect long-time presenter Fiona Bruce as the new quizmaster due to her experience in the show Question Time and her experience as a journalist. The show has always had a severe feel, so that a veteran presenter would be the best fit for the replacement of Jeremy Paxman, according to fans.

Their viewers are a little torn apart, though, as there are other contenders on the run as per the viewer's guess, like Richard Ayoade and Dara O Briain. But the network has not disclosed anything to the public, but there is no doubt that they will choose only the best to replace the best.
