In the late 1980s, the actor and singer Jasmine Guy rose to fame for her portrayal of Whitley Gilbert on the Cosby Show spinoff series A Different World, which followed Denise (Lisa Bonet) to college.

From 1990 to 1993, Guy received four straight NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the program.

She portrayed Sheila "Grams" Bennet on The Vampire Diaries and Roxy Harvey on Dead Like Me, respectively. She most recently appeared in Grey's Anatomy as Gemma, Richard Webber's friend, and prospective love interest.

Jasmine Guy is alive. Guy made her acting debut on television in a non-speaking capacity in seven episodes of the 1982 drama series Fame, which Debbie Allen choreographed.

Guy's most prominent part to this day is that of Whitley Gilbert in the sitcom A Different World, in which she starred. The Cosby Show spinoff, which Bill Cosby himself produced, aired on NBC from 1987 through 1993.

She started as a co-star but ended up taking the place of the show's original star, Lisa Bonet, after quitting the series. Guy made her cinematic debut in 1988's musical drama School Daze, directed by Spike Lee. She took on the role of Dina, an African American woman with pale skin and straight hair, which belonged to Gamma Ray, a women's auxiliary of the fraternity Gamma Phi Gamma.

She appeared in a leading role in the famous off-Broadway musical Beehive in 1987 before moving to France to take part in a similar musical revue.

Guy has been in some Broadway shows and national tours, notably as Velma Kelly in Chicago, Crow in The Wiz, Mickey in Leader of the Pack, and Betty Rizzo in Grease.

Guy joined with 19 other women of color in 2019 to start the Reel Divas project. According to Deadline, reel Divas is a nonprofit that seeks to promote Black writers, producers, and directors as well as raise exposure of Atlanta as a production hub.

Guy, who starred in Spike Lee's 1988 film School Daze, achieved popularity in the movies about the same time she rose to fame on television. She frequently appears in TV movies, including the occasional holiday rom-com.

Terrence Duckett, a consultant, and the actor were married from 1998 to 2008. Imani Duckett, the couple's daughter, was born in 1999.

After ten years of marriage, Guy and Duckett announced their divorce on April 8, 2008, citing irreconcilable reasons. The following year, Guy and her daughter moved to Atlanta, Guy's hometown.
