Fidel Ramos was a former politician and soldier who served as the 12th president of the Philippines from 1992-1998.

After the retirement, the former president remained active in politics, serving as adviser to his successors. He was widely credited and admired by many for revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the Philippine economy.


What Contributions Did Fidel Ramo Make To the Philippines?

His first few years of administration were characterized by an economic boom, political stability, technological development, and efficient delivery of basic needs to the people. He started an ambitious development plan dubbed "Philippines 2000." And working under this plan, many industries critical to economic development were privatized or deregularized.

The external debt was brought to more manageable levels, and the taxation system was reformed. He started implementing economic reforms to open up the closed national economy, invite more foreign and domestic investment, encourage private enterprise, and reduce widespread corruption.

He made peace with a rebel panel. The former president was instrumental in signing the final peace agreement between the government and the Moro National Liberation Front. The 12th president speeded the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program of former president Corazon Aquino.

Fidel Ramos's Education Background

The former president completed his elementary education at Lingayen Elementary school and graduated as a class valedictorian. Fidel Ramos initially studied at the University of Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) for his secondary education, but he graduated from the Centro Escolar University Integrated School. The former politician earned a government scholarship to study at the United States Military Academy, in New York, USA, in 1946, a few months after joining the National University in Manila.

This opportunity paved the process of the former president's career as a professional soldier. In 1950, the 12th president of the Philippines graduated with a bachelor's degree in military engineering. After this, he gained his master's degree in civil engineering as a government scholar from the University of Illinois. The former soldier holds a license in civil engineering in the Philippines by passing the board exams in 1953.

He also has a master's degree in national security administration from the National Defense College of the Philippines. Further, he also holds a master's in business administration (MBA) from the Ateneo de Manila University.

The former politician has fourteen Honorary Doctorate from Philippine Universities. Similarly, he has fourteen more Honorary Doctorates from foreign universities and institutions.

Fidel Ramo Family and Background

He was born in Lingayen, Pangasinan. His father is Narciso Ramos, a journalist, lawyer, member of the House Of Representatives, and secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs. His mother, Angela Valdez Ramos, is an advocate of women's suffrage and an educator.

The 12th president's sister Leticia Ramos Shahani was a senator, undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and United Nations official. While his other sister Gloria Ramos da Rodd, was a diplomat.

The former politician married Amelita Martinez, more popularly known as Ming Ramos. They have five children: Angelina Jones, Josephine Samartino, Carolina Sembrano, Christine Jalasco, and Gloria Ramos.

Fidel Ramos Death Cause

He died at the Makati Medical Center in Makati at the age of 94 years. He died as a result of an unsuccessful battle with COVID 19.
