Ilhan Abdullahi Omar has represented Minnesota's 5th congressional district in the United States Congress since 2019. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party is one she belongs to.

Rep. Omar previously represented a portion of Minneapolis in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 before being elected to Congress. She represents the entirety of Minneapolis as well as some of its outer-ring suburbs.

Moreover, Omar is the first Somali American, first African-born naturalized citizen, and first woman of color to represent Minnesota in the US Congress.


Why Was Rep Ilhan Omar Arrested?

Ilhan Omar, a Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota, was arrested in Washington, D.C. Omar and other MPs were protesting the reversal of Roe v. Wade on the afternoon of June 19, 2022.

Omar's arrest was confirmed by her staff on Tuesday afternoon. Her office said earlier in the day that the congresswoman would take part in a demonstration against the overthrow of Roe v. Wade on Tuesday before the US Supreme Court.

Moreover, Omar was anticipated to attend the event alongside other legislators from both parties, including Representatives Jackie Speier (D-California), Cori Bush (D-Missouri), Carolyn Maloney (D-New York), Sara Jacobs (D-California), and Madeleine Dean (D-Pennsylvania).

There is no information on whether every politician who attended the event was detained. Although the names were withheld, the U.S. Capitol Police claim that a total of 34 people, including 16 members of Congress, were detained for obstructing First Street Northeast. Police stated that it is illegal to impede traffic and noted that they had given three customary warnings before detaining some of the protesters who would not leave the street.

Ilhan Omar Ethnicity And Religion: Is She Muslim?

Ilhan Omar is of Somali ethnicity and belongs to the Muslim religion. Omar was raised in Baidoa, Somalia, and was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She had seven siblings, including her sister Sahra Noor, and was the youngest.

Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre and also a teacher training. He is a native Somali from the Majeerteen clan in northeastern Somalia. When Ilhan was two years old, her mother Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a member of the Benadiri group of partially Yemeni heritage, passed away.

Her father and grandfather, both moderate Sunni Muslims who rejected the dogmatic Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, nurtured her. Some of Omar's uncles and aunts were also employed as city workers and educators, while her grandpa Abukar served as the director of Somalia's National Marine Transport. For four years, she and her family resided in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, not far from the Somali border, after fleeing Somalia to avoid the Somali Civil War.

Ilhan Omar Husband And Family Details

Ilhan Omar and her husband Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi were married for 3 years, however, their marriage ended in divorce. In Minnesota, Rep. Ilhan Omar divorced her husband legally a month after filing a petition claiming that their marriage had experienced an irretrievable breakdown.

Although they had been longstanding lovers, Omar and Ahmed Hirsi had been married since January 2018. According to Omar, Hirsi is the father of her three kids. After the papers were approved by the court Tuesday, the marriage was dissolved. A Washington, D.C., lady accused the Democratic congresswoman of having an affair with her husband months before the divorce.

Omar's family obtained asylum in the United States and came to New York in 1995. They then briefly resided in Arlington, Virginia, before relocating to and settling in Minneapolis, where her father first worked as a taxi driver and later for the post office.
